Costa Rica remained a Spanish colony for almost 300 years. In 1821 together with many other Central American colonies
declared her independence from Spain. Since the late 19th Century only two brief periods of violence have marred the country's development.
Costa Rica is a peaceful country and has not had a standing army since 1948. CR has a fascinating ecological story woven into history of a peaceful and family oriented culture; education and healthcare is free.
There is a keen awareness for the environment to maintain a a high standard of biodiversity. Drawing from their pre-Columbian and indigenous roots, Costa Ricans have lived up to their environmental values.
We visited the Jade Museum and the pre-Columbian Gold Museum which has a substantial collection of over 1600 artifacts of Pre-Columbian gold dating back to AD 500 - (Wikipedia), as well as the Colonial National Theatre which opened in 1897.
